Staithes Local Area
Untouched by time, Staithes is a charming fishing village, with recent finds dating a settlement there all the way back to the Bronze Age.
The cobbled streets and traditional shops create a quiant atmosphere. There is also a bistro, café, post office,and The Gift shop where you can buy just about anything, an excellent butchers and a choice of two local pubs a very short distance from the cottages. The Fox and Hounds in Dalehouse village is a short distance away and is well worth a visit for its traditional decor, unspoilt atmosphere and friendly locals.
The Captain Cook and Staithes Musuem will give a small insight into the rich history of the area. Staithes is as popular with artists today as it was in the 1900’s when the ‘Staithes’ group lived there.
The harbour and beach offer amazing views and also great opportunities for fishing, surfing, fossil hunting, and crabbing. The art gallery and craft centre (in season) are well worth a look around. And of course for the artists and photographers among you it is the ideal spot to paint or take that "perfect" picture.
Whitby offers a day out in itself, giving you the chance to take in the history and Goathland (where the TV programme “Heartbeat” is filmed) takes you right into the moors, with the sheep still roaming the street.
The famous steam railway is highly recommended so why not take the train to Pickering?
Thornton le Dale is a chocolate box village with thatched cottages, and is extremely popular with walkers. Robin Hood’s Bay, Sandsend, Redcar, Saltburn and Runswick Bay are all only a few miles away.
